West German Government Aid to the Baha’is

Wednesday 7 Mordad – 29 July

London – Reuters: A spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of West Germany said,

“This country supports the efforts of the followers of the Baha’i faith to address the Iranian government’s treatment of Baha’is at the United Nations.”

Reuters mentioned that, in the recent months, tens of Baha’is have been executed in Iran, [always] with the accusations of spying for Israel, and belonging to this misled sect. This spokesperson said, “In response to the telegram from the Baha’i National Council in West Germany, Hans Dietrich Genscher, West Germany’s minister of foreign affairs, expressed his concern and support for their struggles.”

This spokesperson said, “The Bonn government believes that Baha’is have the right to try to ask for discourse on this issue at the United Nations.” The statement, published yesterday by West Germany’s National Baha’i Council, notes that two individuals who were executed in Khorasan Province last Sunday were Baha’is. It states, “Kamaloddin Bakhtavar and Nemat[ollah]… Kotobpour Shahedi [Katebpour Shahidi] were accused of political interference and belonging to the Baha’i community.”

Reuters mentioned that, on Sunday, Radio Iran, in announcing the news of the execution of these two, said, “They were spies for Israel and belonged to the perverse sect.” The West German National Baha’i Council also announced, “Hundreds of Baha’i families have been expelled from villages around the cities of Isfahan, Kashan and Khorasan Province within the last several days.”

Referring to the absence of acknowledgement of the Baha’i sect in the Constitution of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Reuters notes in closing, “Tens of members of this sect have been executed since the beginning of this year, while the religious fundamentalists have been strengthening their power.”
