Political Memoirs of Ayatollah Khalkhali

Thirty-fifth part

Q: You are very knowledgeable about the groups and their backgrounds; what is your opinion regarding the anti-Baha’i society (Hojjatieh)?

But regarding the Hojjatieh:

I must say that after the imam’s remarks, [in which he asked], do you trust these people with any key positions? and following the decisive stance we took towards them in the parliament, it seems that they announced the [society’s] dissolution, and said, “We are no longer active”; whereas they had started vast activities. They have continuous activities in Khoy, Ardebil, Sarab, Tabriz, Shiraz, Isfahan, Tehran and Mashhad. I have recently heard that it seems they are recruiting members too, as well as having some desperate activities. Mr. Qomi has become the third marja’ taqlid for the Hojjatieh society! It is said that their first marja’ taqlid[1] is in Najaf, their second marja’ taqlid is Mr. Shari’atmadari, who is in Qom, and almost their third marja’ taqlid is Mr. Qomi. They also have a few more Sources. In summary, they neither believe in the Imam, nor in the Islamic Republic of Iran. Perhaps, as they have said, they feel this Islamic Republic government is worse than the shah, since they say that the shah did not believe in the appearance of the Imam of the Time. However, they believe in it and they have stopped the Imam of the Time from appearing and ruling, and they consider all the organizations and authorities as being against the Shari’a [religious law]. They almost consider all the worthy people as unfit. This is the ideology of the Hojjatieh Society. The Hojjatieh Society has noteworthy activities and they believe that the goal justifies the means, the same way that the Communists believe. However, it [Hojjatieh Society] accomplishes its goal in one way and those [the Communists] in a different way. They are even willing to collude with the corpse of the shah, with the body of the shah, with the bones of the shah, but they are not willing to collaborate with this Islamic Republic, which is the follower of the Prophet. If the Hojjatieh Society had existed in the time of the Prophet, [it would have] wanted to poison the Prophet’s camel in Aqaba, in order to kill the Prophet in the winding streets of Aqaba. If the Hojjatieh Society had existed in the time of His Holiness [Imam] Ali, they would have been among the Khawarej and those who went after His Holiness Ali, Peace be on Him, to the point of striking Him with a sword …

[marjaʿ taqlīd or marjaʿ dīnī (Arabic: /مرجع تقليد مرجع ديني‎), literally meaning "source to imitate/follow" or "religious reference", is a title given to the highest level Shia authority, a Grand Ayatollah with the authority to make legal decisions within the confines of Islamic law for followers and less-credentialed clerics. After the Qur'an and the prophets and imams, marājiʿ are the highest authority on religious laws in Usuli Shia Islam.]
