Continued harassment of Mr. Behfar Khanjani’s family

Latest news from Iran

New information has been obtained about the arson attack on Mr. Behfar Khanjani’s house on 25 February [2009] (7 Esfand [1387]), the details of which have previously been reported. On 25 February, the day on which a Molotov cocktail was thrown into Mr. Khanjani’s house for the second time, the head of the tailors’ union went to the tailor shop of Mrs. Shamil Pirasteh, the wife of Mr. Khanjani, and handed her a letter revoking her business licence.

Mrs. Pirasteh and Mr. Khanjani’s numerous appeals to various departments to cancel the notice have had no effect, and they have recently been told that they must either close the shop or the local authorities will seal it. Earlier, Mr. Khanjani had been threatened over the phone by those who called themselves “followers of the Twelfth Imam” and asked to leave Semnan; otherwise, his house would be set on fire in the same way that the Semnan cemetery was set on fire.

At 3:00 a.m. on 1 February 2009, the arsonists attacked the three-storey apartment building where Mr. Behfar Khanjani, Mr. Nejat Khanjani and their parents live. Two Molotov cocktails were thrown by saboteurs at the exterior wall of the building, one of which fell by a window on the first floor and the other on the second-floor balcony. The members of the family, who heard the blast, [became aware of] the incident, and immediately put out the fire.
