The Role of Social Democracy in the Constitutional Revolution

In a telegram communicated by one of the campaigning scholars, addressed to the public against the tyranny of Mohammad Ali Shah, it is said:

“We announce God’s commandments to the nation. Today, efforts to eliminate this tyrant and defend the people and property of the Muslims is of great importance, and paying taxes to his agents is one of the greatest sins. Striving and making efforts to strengthen and establish constitutionalism is considered as jihad in the entourage of the Imam of Time, may my spirit be a sacrifice to Him, and opposition to the extent of a hair [is considered] neglect and a failure and enmity with the Prophet Muhammad.”

This is how the constitutionalist clergy had understood the “commandments of God” and had communicated [them] to the people. But the clergy who served imperialism and defended the authoritarian monarchy, on the contrary, believed that constitutionalism is blasphemy and absolute heresy. They claimed that the constitution eliminates religion, and instead of a constitutional government, a Sharia government should prevail and religion must be established. According to these mindless [people], the parliament has only strengthened “Babism and the Naturalists”.  One of them writes:

“You have no idea how much harm the National Consultative Assembly is causing the people’s religion and their lives, and what religious consequences are associated with it. An Assembly, with the Babi and naturalist as its components, as well as in its leadership, will not be better than this...”

... the armed forces of tyranny formed by Cossacks were command by the Tzar’s officers—the unaware tribes and dogmatic thugs and hooligans.  In conflict with the constitutionalists, they did not have the slightest respect for humane and moral values. They would pillage, rape, assault people’s lives, property and honour, and consider it as normal. The reactionary clergy would acquit them of all these crimes, and by claiming that the Constitutionalists are Babis and naturalists [materialist], considered shedding their blood permissible...
