[LETTERHEAD OF THE NATIONAL SPIRITUAL ASSEMBLY OF THE BAHA’IS OF SWITZERLAND]
[Date:] 5 July 1993
H: E. Mr. M. R. Alborzi
Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran
We are compelled to convey to you that we learned today with a deep sense of indignation of the destruction of the graves in the Bahá’í Cemetery of Teheran. This cemetery containing thousands of graves is of historical significance to the Bahá’ís throughout the world. However, we understand that the local municipality intends to use the site for the construction of the Cultural Centre of Khavaran , and that the graves of the deceased are being dug up, and their remains exhumed and removed by truckload to be disposed of at an undisclosed location , while the site is being excavated in preparation for the construction work.
Such disrespect for the deceased is appalling, particularly in view of Iran's age-old history of culture and civilization, and we are utterly dismayed that such inconceivable treatment of the final resting-places of our departed fellow Bahá’ís in Iran is being allowed or even contemplated. Tolerance for this development can only be interpreted as a sign of the continuing persecution of the Baha’is in Iran on the basis of their religion.
On behalf of the Bahá’ís of Switzerland, we therefore appeal most earnestly to you for an urgent intervention to bring about an immediate stop to the construction of Cultural Centre of Khavaran on site of the Baha’i Cemetery in Teheran and a halt to destruction of the Bahá’í graves there. We are grateful to you for your action in this regard.
Please accept, Sir, the assurances of our respectful consideration.
