Urgent city telegram

To: Mr. Engineer Bazargan, Prime Minister

With respect, we inform you of the following.  The Baha’is in Iran, who form the largest religious minority in this country, have faced atrocities, calamities, and discrimination for the last 135 years.  Even as recently as three months ago, more than 700 homes of Baha’is came under attack, arson, and pillage.  It has been the greatest wish of this community that in accordance with justice, these calamities would be stopped.  However, despite numerous announcements from top authorities, all kinds of attacks on the oppressed followers of this community and assaults on their establishments and homes have continued.  In some areas, such as Mashhad in the Khorasan province, because of blatant announcements in newsletters and local newspapers, the lives and property of the Baha’is has become subject to grave danger, and at any moment they risk being killed and pillaged.  We urgently beseech you to issue strict orders to protect these trustworthy and service-oriented Iranians, to prevent any spread of these incidents to the three thousand cities and villages in Iran where Baha’is live, and avoid any ensuing public chaos.

With expressions of respect

Dr. Hosein Naji
