The presence [for the attention] of the honourable Mr. Abolhassan Banisadr, may he be honoured

With utmost respect and reverence, [I] would like to bring to Your Honour’s attention that, during the days of 17 and 18 Shahrivar [8-9 September] a number of residents of Shiraz, accompanied by some influential authorities, attacked and demolished the House of His Holiness the Bab. [The House is] situated in Shiraz, and it is considered a holy spot and a place of circumambulation for all His followers in more than ninety-six thousand locations around the world. This [attack] was carried out in the presence of the police force and by prior arrangement. [By this action] the hearts of many people were severely wounded.

There is no doubt that in every revolution, it is possible that some events may take place which are not endorsed by the leaders of the revolution; however, it has been six months now since the beginning of [the Islamic Republic Revolution of Iran], and it seems that law enforcement has been established in the country to a high extent. It seems quite capable of preventing any unprecedented action of the irresponsible elements and instigators of the rebellion, and of preventing the spread of chaos and anarchy, which are [damaging] to the reputation of our country, as in many cases actions have been taken [by those authorities] with favourable results.

Considering that the mentioned House has been taken from [the Baha’i] community under the pretext of protecting it, it would have been necessary to exert more efforts for its protection.  Incidents such as this, in the current situation, are harmful to the best interests of the country and will not receive favourable reaction around the world. As His Holiness Grand Ayatollah Imam Khomeini, the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution of Iran, may his blessings continue, has repeatedly highlighted in his speeches the importance of protecting the freedom of all existing groups, it is requested that you issue strict orders to the police force, by all means you may find possible and necessary, that they do their utmost to prevent the demolition  of the mentioned House, and return this Holy House to this community, and [that you] legally prosecute the perpetrators and agitators for their actions.

Respectfully,

On behalf of the Baha’i community of Iran

Dr. Hossein Naji
