Ayatollah Montazeri: “My views on perverse Baha’i sect are the same as in the years before the revolution and have not changed”.

Questions:

His Holiness Ayatollah Montazeri, with greetings,

In one of your answers regarding the Baha’i sect, after pointing out that this sect is not considered an official religious minority in the Constitution due to its not having a heavenly book, you said, “But because they are citizens of this country and have the right to the water and clay of this land, they enjoy citizenship rights.”

Following the publication of this response, some followers of this sect have misused the term “citizenship rights” and have made many demands, and it has even been said that the opinion you had about this sect in the years before the revolution has changed.

It is requested that you express your opinion on this issue and to define the meaning of citizenship rights, in order to remove any ambiguity.

With gratitude,

Response:

In the Name of God

With greetings and salutations,

My views about the perverse Baha’i sect are the same as in the years before the revolution and have not changed. However in general, people who are not the followers of any of the heavenly religions―according to the verse: “Allah does not forbid you from dealing kindly and fairly with those who have neither fought nor driven you out of your homes. Surely Allah loves those who are fair [Quran- Sura:60 -Verse:8]”[1]; and Imam Ali’s words to Malik al-Ashtar that say: “[Arabic verse][2]―[must have] their human rights respected. Citizenship is also a general term and its limits should be determined according to the custom and the constitution that is accepted by the majority of the people. Of course, if some seek enmity with the people of the country and cooperate with foreign enemies, and their cooperation, according to the laws of the country, is proven in a competent court, they should be punished according to the law and their citizenship rights should not prevent the implementation of the law. And it is necessary to take care that the youth of the country are not caught in the propaganda of their abuse, and if dealing and associating with them strengthens them, it is necessary to avoid it.

I wish you success.
