The exalted authority of the Supreme Council of the Islamic Revolution of Iran

Copy to Ayatollah Beheshti

Respectfully, we convey the following:

Despite the fact that ever since the Revolution, the Baha’i community of Iran has, in writing as well as verbally, proven its obedience and submission to the government of the Islamic Republic of Iran, the same injustices that were inflicted upon this community prior to the revolution are now being repeated, and the rights of this religious minority, which, by number, is larger than all other religious minorities in the country, are being trampled and violated through a series of various baseless allegations and false accusations. Armed individuals continually raid the institutions of this community and take away books, documents and files. Furthermore, all the holy and historic places belonging to the community are confiscated under the pretext of preservation; this includes the Misaghieh Hospital, which also belongs to this community and has been confiscated, too.

Recently, during the days of 17, 18 and 19 of the current month of Shahrivar [8, 9 and 10 September] a group of opportunists, with prior planning and preparation of their needed equipment, and in the company of a number of influential local authorities, raided the House of the Bab in Shiraz, which is a holy place for His followers in over 102,000 localities throughout the world, and is a place considered a point of adoration for the Baha’is. They destroyed and demolished the House and brought heartbreak to the Baha’is of the world through this heinous act of injustice and cruelty. In addition to demolishing this House, during the past several months, many holy places and gathering centres of Baha’is have been intentionally razed to the ground in the localities of Arak, Abadeh, Sangsar, Ajabshir, Kerman, Najafabad, Yazd and a few other places.

Unfortunately, the repeated appeals to the central and local authorities have not availed. Therefore, after the lapse of seven months since the Revolution, during which time all issued orders have been patiently, calmly and willingly obeyed according to our religious duty; and while we have been, enduringly and without any pretence, grateful for all that has befallen us, as all the injustices have been carried out and the confiscations have been issued in the name of establishing security; and as there exists no reason for the confiscation of the mentioned properties, we therefore emphatically request that supreme authority to issue orders for the return of all the properties and institutions, so that this community may take action in a wise and discreet way regarding its maintenance.

With most sincere respect,

On behalf of the Baha’i community of Iran

Dr. Hosein Naji

Manouher Ghaem-Maghami
