Investigation into the Murder Case of Ataollah Rezvani, a Baha’i Citizen, After 8 years of Obstruction and Judicial Procrastination

HRANA News Agency – The murder case of Ataollah Rezvani, a Baha’i citizen from Bandar Abbas, was referred to Branch 6 of the Bandar Abbas Public and Revolutionary Prosecutor’s Office for retrial eight years after the incident. This case had been removed from the archives of the Prosecutor’s office of Bandar Abbas after years of obstruction and judicial procrastination. In Shahrivar 1392 [September 2013], news of the murder of this citizen was published in the media. Due to the victim’s belief in the Baha’i Faith, his record of social activities in Bandar Abbas and the sporadic harassment from the influential offices in the city, such as the office of the Friday prayer leader in Bandar Abbas, from the beginning of the news of this murder, accusations were levelled at intelligence and security agencies. Despite the passage of years, the perpetrator/s of the murder have neither been identified nor interviewed by judicial authorities.

Ataollah Rezvani on the night of 2 Shahrivar 1392 [24 August 2013] disappeared and his lifeless body was discovered by passers-by at noon the next day, 3 Shahrivar [25 August] in one of the deserts around Bandar Abbas.

However, after years of representation by lawyers for the Baha’i citizens and his family, his murder case has not been solved due to obstruction and judicial procrastination, and the perpetrator/s of his murder have not been identified nor interviewed by judicial authorities.

According to the police, Ataollah Rezvani’s body was inside his car when it was discovered, while a bullet that had hit the head area had exited the other side. In the initial investigations, it seemed that nothing was taken from the victim or his car, but the victim’s mobile phone was not found with the body or inside the car, and it is possible that the perpetrator/s of the murder had stolen it. According to the evidence, the murder took place outside Mr. Rezvani’s car and the body was transferred to inside the car.

Three months after the assassination of Ataollah Rezvani, in Azar 1392 [November 2013], HRANA had published a report by Dr. Aria Haghgou, a lawyer and an attorney counsel, analysing the murder of another Baha’i citizen.
