EMBASSY OF THE ISLAMIC REPUBLIC OF IRAN
[Date:] 22 JULY 93
Dear Sir/ Madam,
With reference to your letter dated 15th July 1993, we hereby inform you that the claim regarding “site demolition” with the aim of destruction of the Bahà’is cemetery in Tehran is unfounded. Rather, the Municipality of Tehran is implementing a project to level the concerned site, and has excavated only about 20 cm of soil. This only applies to the graves that their legal lives of 30 years have been expired and not to the new graves. A great deal of attention is being paid to the protection of other graves.
It is necessary to mention that this project is implemented in accordance with the plans of the Municipality of Tehran with the purpose of renovation and beautification of the city and it is not only limited to the Bahà’is cemetery, but rather, involves a vast area in Tehran. Renovation plans of the Municipality of Tehran which are constantly implemented in different districts of the city sometimes also involve the old Muslim cemeteries in Tehran.
