[A poem written by Ali Ghiyami in prison]

(Ali Ghiyami from Dieselabad Prison, 139 Badi [1982 A.D.])

O the sign of excellence, His holiness Abdu’l-Baha

Has made pleasure and delight

With the hands of Baha’s foes

Gives away the crystal cup of Calamity

And proffers a few drops into our throat

Hail, well done, O Abdu’l-Baha

Fifteen of thy lovers

In the prison of Bakhtaran city

At the claws of the foes of the age

Pray with their very beings

O Saviour of the people of Baha, O Abdu’l-Baha

We were deep in a well, all forgotten

Of the mercy of that King of the world

Become one with the reign of the moon

Make us Your own companion

O Sign of the mercy of Baha, O Abdu’l-Baha

We are His fleck of nothingness

We are His loss-making servants

We are oblivious of His bounty

Have mercy upon us

O Abdu’l-Baha

These lovers of Thy countenance

Wanderers in search of Thy path

Speechless and awe-stricken by Thy behaviour

Waiting eagerly to hear Thy call

Give us Thy favour give us Thy generosity, O Abdu’l-Baha

O Love, recall us

Cause us to be detached from the rest

Give us the cup of suffering

Awaken our eyes

In praising and thanking Baha, O Abdu’l-Baha

In every tongue we repeat ‘Free us’

With every mouth we say ‘Give us relief’

In every night and throughout time

We say ‘O Lord our Baha’

We sing and we say in prayer, O Abdu’l-Baha

Foe believing in himself

Has multiplied our difficulties

Not knowing that we with soul and body

On the path of that utterer of sweetness

We want to sacrifice ourselves for Him O Abdu’l-Baha

We are weary from oppression

We are wretched from tyranny

We are withered from injustice

Have mercy upon us

Make us firm in Thy Covenant, O Abdu’l-Baha

We are happy with destiny

We surrender to any fate

We are aware to offer our lives

We are happy, we are happy

We seek no path but Thy good pleasure, O Abdu’l-Baha

Our hearts are burning

From the fire of separation from Baha

Have mercy O Leader

Open to us the gate of Thy countenance

With prayers we are begging, O Abdu’l-Baha

Have frozen in this place

Darkness has enveloped the world

O Manifestation of the light of the age

Have mercy upon the sinners

O inner sight of the eye of Baha, O Abdu’l-Baha

We are ashamed of every sin

We are humbled by Thy generosity

We are remorseful of every wrongdoing

O sin-coverer, cover our sins

O Centre of the Covenant and faithfulness, O Abdu’l-Baha

Light and the lamp are His possessions

The inner glass is His possession

All creation is at His command

All power is of His accord

O setting-place of the Sun of Baha, O Abdu’l-Baha

May all lives be a sacrifice to Thee

Ready to obey Thy command

We yearn to be present at Thy table

Our souls sacrificed to Thy Covenant

Make us a sacrifice in Thy path O Abdu’l-Baha

We are feeble and powerless

We are the captives of body and soul

We are shortcoming itself

Thou art He Who, taking our hands,

Renders kindness to us O Affectionate One

O Sign of favour and purity

This servant is shameful

This earthly one is disabled

This sinful one is distressed

This powerless one is dejected

Free me of all desire, O Abdu’l-Baha
