A Segment from the History of Enlightenment in Iran

From the “Society of Mir Seyyed Ali Moshtaq” to the Iranian Writers’ Association

A few sentences as introduction:

Iran’s last two hundred years of history has continuously witnessed the creation, development and relative spread of the societies and cultural (literary) organizations. Such societies and organizations have continued their work under different names, duties, goals and diverse activities…

… The literary societies had also been organized in other cities, particularly in Qazvin, and “the speech of Qurratu’l-Ayn in one such society, caused the Imperial Court to terminate the life of this noble poetess”.

During the mentioned periods, the political and social conditions were such that the government—the Imperial Court—played a fundamental role in [the development] of the literary societies. These societies were inclined to the Imperial Court, and those writers who were against the Imperial Court were compelled to work in seclusion and continue their work privately. The reason for the dependency of the majority of writers on the Imperial Court, in addition to their material need, was also the absence of the independent mass communication system to disseminate the messages of the poets in those days. In fact, the Imperial Court and the governing body were the only channels for the dissemination of the works of artists.”…
