Dated 1 Shahrivar 1359 [23 August 1980]

Honorable Grand Ayatollah Qoddusi, esteemed Prosecutor General of the Revolutionary Islamic Republic of Iran

Respectfully, we inform you that on 30 Mordad 1359 [21 August 1980] , at 4:00 pm, a number of armed Guards came to Naft street and arrested and took away the following persons, 1- Manouher Ghaem-Maghami, 2- Engineer Abdul-Hosein Taslimi, 3- Dr. Hosein Naji, 4- Ebrahim Rahmani, 5- Yousef Ghadimi, 6- Ataollah Mogharrebi, 7- Mrs. Bahiyyeh Naderi, 8- Dr. Kambiz Sadeghzadeh, 9- Houshang Mahmoudi, 10- Dr. Yousef Abbassian, and 11- Heshmatollah Rowhani, all heads of the undersigned families.  From that time until now, and despite unsuccessful searches, we do not know where these oppressed ones have been imprisoned.  What we do know for certain is that the reason for their arrest is their allegiance to the Baha’i Faith.  However, based on their religious beliefs, Baha’is refrain from interfering in political affairs and consider obedience to the government their duty. But fanatical, and ill-intentioned individuals have used this opportunity to pursue their religious biases, and by spreading doubt and confusion, have deprived these innocent individuals from both their religious and legal rights.  And, this is despite the fact that religious prejudice and ill-intentions have never been acceptable to God or to the Great Messenger (peace be upon him), and any pious Muslim must consider injustice to be a great sin.

Baha’is believe in the oneness of God and the truth of all His messengers and so recognize the truth of His Highness Mohammad Mostafa (peace be upon him) and the pure Imams, peace be upon them, who are the rightful heirs of His Highness [Prophet Mohammad].  Certainly no one except God can reign over the hearts of human beings, and it is for this reason that the Great God has, through the unequivocal verse in the sacred Quran which says “There is no compulsion in religion”, prohibited Muslims from objecting to the spiritual and heart-felt beliefs of others who believe in the oneness of God, and has made it mandatory for every Muslim to act with fairness.  Accepting other spiritual beliefs is so important that God has said to the Great Messenger in the Quran, There shall be no compulsion in [acceptance of] the religion[1] and your religions is for you and it is forbidden for the religion of Muslims to invade the spiritual and heartfelt beliefs of others, who believe in the Unity of God. God also made the enforcement of Islamic Justice a duty of Muslim persons in every situation.  The importance of preventing the invasion of spiritual beliefs of others is so critical that in the Blessed Quran God has told the Exalted Prophet: Indeed, We sent down to you the Book for the people in truth. So whoever is guided - it is for [the benefit of] his soul; and whoever goes astray only goes astray to its detriment. And you are not a manager over them.[2]

It is clear and unarguable that false allegations and slander, or unjust action, are not acceptable to God.

We request your respected office to kindly give attention to instructing that an investigation be carried out and an order made that the oppressed heads of these desperate families be released, Be just; that is nearer to righteousness.[3]

With expressions of respect
