A copy of the legal bill on “the prohibition of employment of individuals who do not belong to one of the religions of Islam, Zoroastrianism, Judaism and Christianity in the Armed Forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran”, which was approved by the Revolutionary Council of the Islamic Republic of Iran in the meeting of 29/8/58 [20 November 1979], and communicated by letter number 402/03/47, [date:] 12/9/58 [3 December 1979], SMAJA[3] (Laws and Regulations) is hereby sent for your information and to take the necessary action.

The draft bill for the prohibition of recruitment of those who are not followers of one of the religions of Islam, Zoroastrianism, Judaism, and Christianity into the Armed Forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran:

 

Article 1- Recruitment of those who are not followers of one of the religions of Islam, Zoroastrianism, Judaism, and Christianity into the Armed Forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran is absolutely prohibited.

 

Addendum 1- Those who are not followers of one of the specified religions and were previously employed by the Armed Forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran, if they are guided and have sincerely accepted Islam, can continue to stay in their service; otherwise, they will be dismissed from their employment.

 

Addendum 2- Retirees, employees and pensioners of the Armed Forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran, if they are not believers in one of the specified religions, will be deprived of their salaries unless they are guided and have sincerely accepted Islam.

 

Addendum 3- Commissioned personnel and the same ranks of civilian staff, the retirees, employees and pensioners [who are] related to the [prohibited] staff are exempt from Addendum 2.

 

Addendum 4-  The criterion for being guided and accepting Islam is to submit a written certificate from one of the Marja‘-i-Taqlíd[4] to confirm the denunciation of previous beliefs and acceptance of Islam and to publish the [certificate] in one of the country’s widely circulated newspapers.
