In Azar 1357 [December 1978] about two months before the victory of the Islamic Revolution, Imam Khomeini, while still in exile in Neauphle-le-Chateau, in response to James Cockroft, a professor at Rutgers University, who asked him about the political and religious freedom of the Baha’is under the Islamic government, said, “They are a political party; they are harmful and will not be accepted.”

After the victory of the Islamic revolution, on 2 Khordad 1362 [23 May 1983], Ronald Reagan, the president of the United States of America, requested pardon for 22 Baha’is that were in Shiraz Prison. On 7 Khordad 1362 [28 May 1983], Imam Khomeini, in his public speech, said in response, “Baha’i[sm] is not a religion. It is a [political] party, a party that in the past was supported by the United Kingdom, and now the United States of America also supports it. They are spies.” (Sahifeh-ye Imam, Volume 17, Pages 455 – 464)

In the Name of God, exalted be His station

28 Dhu’l-Hijja 1383 [21 Ordibehesht 1343] [11 May 1964]

To the presence of His Holiness Grand Ayatollah Haj Agha Ruhollah Khomeini,

It is requested that you clarify the ruling of holy Sharia regarding the marriage of Muslims to Baha’is―giving and taking a wife―as well as clarifying the question of their taharat[1] and najasat[2] and particularly regarding their entrance to the Muslim public baths. We will be grateful.

Questioner: Mohammad Ali Gerami

[Answer:]

In the Name of God,

This perverse sect is infidel and najis and entering into wedlock with them is not permitted. They should not enter the Muslims’ bathhouses.
