19 Shahrivar 1358 [10 September 1979]

Mr. Ahmad Sadr Haj Seyyed Javadi, respected Minister for Justice

With utmost respect and reverence, we have a submission for your attention. On the seventeenth and eighteenth of the current month, Shahrivar, some people of Shiraz, in the company of influential individuals and authorities, having made preparations and with the presence of police officers, destroyed the House of The Bab in Shiraz, a holy place for His followers in over ninety-six thousand localities in the world, a hallowed spot for the Baha’is, leaving many hearts sorely hurt.

Undoubtedly, in every revolution, events totally unapproved by the leaders of the revolution might take place in the country; but now, six months have passed since its inception, with law enforcement established in the country to a great extent, [and] it appears that they are very well capable of preventing indiscriminate actions of the irresponsible elements and the rioters, and repressing promotion of lawlessness and anarchy which may reflect on the reputation of the country. As seen in many other cases, desirable action and outcome has been achieved. Considering that the mentioned House, was taken from this community for protection purposes, it would have necessitated extra care, as the occurrence of these incidents, under the current circumstances, is deemed [contrary] to the country’s best interests, and would not reflect desirably in the world. His Worship Ayatollah Khomeini, supreme leader of the Islamic Revolution of Iran, may blessings be upon him, has repeatedly reflected on the necessity of preserving freedom of existing people of all description.

We therefore humbly request that you make strict instructions so the law enforcement authorities will prevent any actions destroying the said House, and to return it to this community, prosecuting the perpetrators and instigators.

With kind regards

On behalf of the Baha’i community of Iran

Dr. Hosein Naji
