In the Name of the Almighty

To His Reverence the Grand Ayatollah Fazel Lankarani [compliment],

In the city of Marvdasht (Fars province), a few Baha’is have started businesses, and people associate and have dealings with them every day; therefore, we ask Your Reverence to answer the following questions:

  1. Are the Baha’is consider to be Muslims or infidels and najis [unclean]?
  2. What has been decreed with regard to greeting them and shaking their hands?
  3. What has been decreed with regard to buying something from their store or selling something to them?
  4. Can we sit at the dinner table with people of this perverse sect and eat their food?

[Handwritten answer:]

In the Name of the Almighty

  1. Baha’is are not Muslims; they are infidels and najis.
  2. Greeting them is not permitted and when you shake hands with them you need to be aware of the laws on najis.
  3. Doing business with them, by itself, is not forbidden unless it leads to the propagation of their baseless religion or the influencing of Muslims.
  4. Their food is najis and eating it is forbidden.
