The Fatwas of Ayatollah Makarem Shirazi About the Baha’is

Ayatollah Makarem Shirazi considers the Baha’is to be Kafar-i-Harbi[1], unclean and apostate, and prohibit [does not permit] any kind of [business] dealings or assistance with the followers of this perverse sect. He has forbidden the coming and going and friendship with the people of this sect and has stated, “The only way that one can continue these relationships with the followers of this sect is when there is hopes for them to be guided. Additionally, he does not consider it permissible marrying them.”

Adyannet – The clergies and marja’-i-Taqlid [religious jurisprudence authorities] have always been in the forefront to the fight against the religious deviations and cultural influences and have blocked these deviations through their discernment in the Time of Occultation [the Imam’s absence].

In this article we are trying to find out the views of Ayatollah Makarem Shirazi (May God extend his excellent shadow) about the perverse Baha’i sect. Since there have been many questions about the Baha’is, we mention below the questions and the text of his response.

1- Identity of Baha’is: “We know that under current situations the question of Baha’is is not only a religious issue and has more political aspect to it and there are many evidences that they act in favour of the foreigners. The strong defence of the legislatures of some Western countries is one of these evidences. Therefore, under such conditions, they cannot be seen as a group that wants to live peacefully in this country and they are, in fact the Muhareb.[2] [1]

2- Association and Friendship with Baha’is: “if you are not interested to convert him/her to Islam, do not continue your friendship.”[2] And in another place he shas stated: “Coming and going and friendship with the members of the perverse Baha’i sect is not permitted, unless you are hopeful that they may be guided.” [3]

3- Education of the Baha’is: “Their education is not permissible.” [4]

4- Property of the Baha’is: “Confiscation of their property is permissible, unless they are not active.” [5]

5- Association with the Baha’is: “Baha’is are Kafar-i-Harbi, since they do not shy away from any effort against us. [6]

6- Business dealings with Baha’is: “It is not permissible to do business dealings with Baha’is. But if you were not aware, there is no problem in keeping what you have purchased from them” [7]. In another place he sates, “ there is no doubt that they are deviant people and their false religion is founded by the colonial powers of England and the United States of America and they are considered as Kafar-i-Harbi and no collaboration is permissible with them. [8]

7- The Ruling on Baha’i belongings after converting to Islam: “By converting to Islam ad becoming Muslim, their belongings will be purified.” [9]

8- Marriage with Baha’is: “Marrying the members of this perverse sect is not permissible, unless they convert to Islam.” [10]

9- Working for Baha’is and receiving wage from them: “It is not permissible.” [11]

10- Helping the Baha’is: “It is forbidden by Sharia law to extend any assistance to this perverse sect and its members.” [12]

11- Accepting Gifts from Baha’is: Baha’is are not Muslim and are against the Islam. Do not allow your children to associate with them and do not accept their gifts.” [13]

12- The taharat[3] and nejasat[4] of Baha’is: Baha’is are infidels and unclean.” [14]

It is hoped that under the shadow of the statements of Ahlul Bayt[5] (PBUH), and the guidance of clergies and religious jurisprudence authorities, soon the foundation of this perverse sects and particularly, the perverse Baha’i sect, are dismantled from the Islamic societies.
